A highly scientific investigation involving blankets, snacks, small dogs & absolutely no obligations

There are books you read. And then there are books you arrange an entire afternoon around.

A cozy mystery deserves the latter.

Technically, you can read one anywhere. On an airplane. In a waiting room. Standing in line at the DMV. But this is not recommended. After considerable investigation, I have concluded that cozy mysteries require certain environmental conditions to achieve maximum coziness.

Fortunately, I have compiled the evidence.

🪑 Exhibit A: The Chair

Not just any chair.

The Chair.

Every serious cozy reader needs one.

It should be slightly oversized, preferably upholstered, and situated somewhere that allows you to tuck your feet underneath yourself in a manner that will become inexplicably uncomfortable approximately forty minutes later. Preferably with a soft blanket.

A good reading chair should also have arms wide enough to accommodate:

☕️ one beverage
📚 at least two books
👓 reading glasses
📝 something to mark a suspicious clue
🐶 one small animal who believes the chair belongs to him

Bonus points if the chair is near a window.

Double bonus points if it is raining outside.

🐶 Exhibit B: The Reading Companion

This is essential. Cats and dogs make excellent mystery-reading companions because they possess the two qualities every detective needs: curiosity and an absolute disregard for personal boundaries.

Your reading companion’s responsibilities include:

warming your feet,

occupying approximately 73% of the available blanket,

interrupting the crucial reveal because someone walked past the house,

and staring at you judgmentally when you gasp because YOU KNEW IT WAS THE VICAR!

Cats offer the additional service of sitting directly on the book.

Both are acceptable.

☕️ Exhibit C: The Beverage

This is where things become dangerous. As previously established in the Murder Book, beverages in cozy mysteries cannot be trusted. Fortunately, beverages consumed while reading cozy mysteries are generally safe.

Tea is the traditional choice.

Coffee is permissible.

Hot chocolate becomes particularly compelling somewhere around November. Whatever you choose, it should ideally be served in a cup you are unnecessarily fond of. This improves the reading experience by at least 22%.

I have no evidence for this.

I stand by the finding.

🍰 Exhibit D: Provisions

Reading a mystery requires sustenance. And a cozy mystery seems to create the peculiar desire to eat whatever the characters are eating. Someone enters the village bakery? Suddenly you need a scone. The sleuth orders pie at the diner? Pie sounds reasonable.

Mrs. Something-or-Other serves shortbread during an interrogation?

You have never wanted shortbread more in your life.

Therefore snacks should be acquired before opening the book.

Leaving the chair once the suspects have assembled is extremely risky.

Ideal cozy-mystery weather:

🌫️ Mysterious fog

Acceptable:

🌷 Gentle spring rain

Challenging but manageable:

☀️ Perfectly pleasant sunshine

If confronted with beautiful weather, simply move to a porch.

There is no reason to behave rashly.

🕯️ Exhibit F: Atmosphere

This doesn’t require turning your house into a Pinterest board. The requirements are actually quite modest.

A lamp rather than an overhead light.

A blanket.

Something warm to drink.

Maybe a candle.

Possibly rain tapping against the window.

And—most important—somewhere you don’t need to be for a while.

That’s the real luxury.

📚 Exhibit G: The Mystery

Now we come to the essential ingredient.

For maximum effect, I prefer a mystery containing at least several of the following:

🏡 A small town
🔎 An amateur sleuth
👵 An underestimated woman
🐈 A suspiciously observant pet
☕️ Frequent refreshments
🌷 Gardening with sinister implications
🗝️ An old house
📰 A local scandal
💌 A mysterious letter
🧁 A bakery
👀 Neighbors who know entirely too much
🕰️ Something that happened twenty years ago
🪦 A murder that everyone would prefer we stop asking about

If there’s a map in the front?

Even better.

🔎 The Perfect Cozy Reading Formula

After exhaustive research, the Murder Book Investigative Division has determined the formula to be:

1 comfortable chair

• 1 excellent mystery
• 1 hot beverage
• 1 unreasonable quantity of snacks
• 1 blanket
• 1 animal of questionable helpfulness
• rain, if available
• several uninterrupted hours

= Ideal Conditions for Murder

Fictional murder, obviously.

🐾 A Note Regarding Companions

There is something particularly lovely about reading a cozy mystery with your animal best friend sleeping nearby. Because while something dreadful may be happening on the page, your actual world is very small for a while.

There is the chair.

The book.

The dog.

The tea.

The rain.

And nowhere else you’re required to be. Perhaps that’s part of the peculiar magic of cozy mysteries. They allow us to visit danger from somewhere profoundly safe.

We can follow the footprints into the woods. Open the mysterious letter. Creep upstairs. Discover the secret passage. And investigate the strange light coming from the supposedly abandoned cottage. Because we’re not actually there.

We’re tucked into the good chair with a dog snoring beside us.

And frankly, that’s exactly where I intend to stay.
